Continuing Ministry Development (CMD) Lead
Before joining the BUS, Andrew lectured in New Testament at the University of Aberdeen for 20 years, with a particular research interest in life and leadership in the earliest Christian communities. Together with his wife, Jane, he has been involved in planting and leading a ‘Simple Church’ in North Aberdeenshire, in which small groups meet regularly as families to worship, learn from each other about God’s call on our lives, and develop as faithful disciples of Jesus – all in the context of hospitality around the kitchen table. He is passionate about these two goals of learning and formation, which come together in his role of CMD Lead.
Baptist Union of Scotland Solicitor
Specialist Areas: Church-related conveyancing, re-structuring churches as Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisations (SCIOs), and general charity compliance.
After a secular upbringing, Alan came to Christian faith suddenly in his late teens through the witness of friends who happened to attend Baptist churches! The twin strands of law and Christian service have woven their way throughout Alan’s career, including studying at the Scottish Baptist College, serving the Lawyers Christian Fellowship, and working in private practice legal firms, large and small.
Alan has progressively specialised in the unique complexities of church title deeds, and more recently has combined this with the charity law knowledge to pilot unincorporated churches through the process of re-structuring as SCIOs, and transferring assets and liabilities to the new entity.
Alan has been our Law Agent/Solicitor since 1996 and has worked part-time in-house for our Union since 2018. Alan runs his own legal practice Diakoneo Legal Services Limited (www.diakoneolegal.com). Diakoneo is Greek for “I serve”, and Alan serves a variety of Baptist and other churches and church-related charitable organisations.
